Blog Image 1204800304_300px_NovaUCD.jpgI realise now why I didn't bother finishing my GNVQ Level 3 in business which I took after my GCSE's. It's because studying business is probably the most boring thing I can think of!

I've been attending a short module at UCD entitled 'Introduction to Entrepreneurship', while its probably going to be fairly useful in the future, it's mind-numbingly boring to take in. It seems to be mostly common sense formalised, the one saving grace is having talks from real entrepreneurs who tell it like it really is. We have had some interesting speakers; the founder of HostelWorld.com, the creator of Gloss Magazine, the guy that brought Little Tykes to Ireland (and the UK) and one of the founders of daft.ie.

Another interesting part was the coursework aspect, which involved interviewing an entrepreneur of individual choice, I chose to interview a friend who is the creator of magicseaweed.com, which was an interesting and informative conversation.

I guess it goes to show then, that actually doing business is fun, but learning about it, is very, very boring......

  1. Formalised common sense: it crops up an awful lot all over education these days. Not surprising given the proliferation of degree programmes and the need to fill them. For instance, the PGCHE I'm currently dragging myself through is not much more than pure common sense dressed up in the most strangulated onanistic language ever devised. Educational theorists do this, I think, because if they used plainer language it would be apparent to the wider academic community that most of the area suffers from a terrible case of Emperor's New Clothes. Business is even worse of course, because of the mindless 'can't say what you really think' corporate doublethink that pervades all of culture now. Maybe I'm just too old and cynical... PS: you couldn't do something about your comments could you? It's like trying to type through a letterbox - ds on Mon Mar 10 2008 11:06:17 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)
