tomtom_gps.jpg - 24Jan2006For my birthday back in December, my housemates clubbed together to get me a GPS reciever, to help with my project, this reciever was the SDIO sort that plugs into the top of a PDA/Smartphone. Unfortunately, for some reason or other, it didn't work, so needed to be returned.

Yesterday, it's replacement arrived, the 'TomTom Wireless GPS MKII' which is a bluetooth GPS reciever :)

It has the Sirfstar III technology, which is good i'm told :) and it seems to interface nicely with the myGRL application that I have been developing :)

Thanks chaps for my birthday present :)

The only problem is, I need to pay the extra £50 for this device as it's slightly more expensive :S hehe, worth it though I reckon :)

UPDATE 24 Feb 2006:

I've been using this device as part of my project for a good month now.

I'm quite impressed with it's accuracy, but it seems to take a while to find a fix. The best method i've found is to stand still for a minute until the green light flashes (to indicate it has a fix).

I haven't used it with any navigation software, so can't comment on that really.

The battery life is pretty good, I have only really been using for no more than an hour at a time, but it's a week before I have to recharge it (in fact i've not actually run it down to no battery yet).

It also has a handy hole so you can put some sort of carrying device in it such as a neckstrap or handstrap. I guess one of those mobile phone things would work too.

Overall at around £100, pretty good value piece of kit accurate, but a little slow to get a fix.
